Plans and Status Report- May 2008

Following are the development plans for the improvement of the quality of education, the physical condition and needs of students & teachers of GBHSS Kathore, Gadap Town near Karachi Pakistan.

Physical Requirements.

The current physical condition of the Government Higher Secondary School, Kathore of district Karachi is not desirable. There is no facility for drinking water. Toilets are locked because they are non functional and sanitary conditions are questionable. Students relieve themselves near the boundary walls of the school, thus creating environmental hazards.

Health Requirement: Arrangement of a medical practitioner for checkup and treatment of school students.

Following vocational and other training programs are planned, implemented and conducted at GBHS School, Kamal Khan Jokhio Kathore. A teachers training program was started from May 15, a highly qualified person was hired as a trainer for the initial training. The training was imparted to 58 student teachers for 5 weeks. After completion of initial training of 58 persons a batch of 15 students were selected to provided some advanced training for another 5 weeks that ended on July 14, 2007. A five weeks intensive teachers training program of Montessori system of education was started from July 17, 2007. This program was conducted every day for three hours. A batch of 20 students was selected. The program was completed on August 21, 2007. The instructor was the same person who conducted first two trainings. Vocational Training: A three month training program in the dressmaking was launched from June 1, 2007. This program was planned to be divided in three phases. In the first phase a one month course of designing, cutting and sewing of either gents or ladies dresses were to be taught. The second phase/month will be devoted for the dress other than the one they have already learned in the first phase/month. The third phase/month is for final steps of training where they will be taught rest of the essentials of sewing and all kind of dresses making and their designing. The initial phase of training program for one month in tailoring was started from June 1, 2007. Two batches of 10 students each were selected, 10 sewing machines, furniture and other training material was purchased. An instructor was hired on contract. The first two batches completed their initial training on June 30. This program gained so much popularity that another two batches of 10 students each were selected for the initial training that started on July 1, 2007 and completed the training on July 31, 2007. Two more batches of 10 students each were selected for the initial training that started from August 1, 2007, the program was completed on September 10, 2007. Second phase of the program for one month is being conducted starting from Sept. 13, 2007. Students will learn to make gent’s dresses in this phase. After completion of the above groups third phase of the program was implemented from October 15, 2007. One batch of 10 students completed their training on Nov 12, 2007. Another batch of 10 students started their training on Nov. 15, 2007 and completed on Dec. 12, 2007. Other Training Programs: A batch of 12 students were provided carpenters (woodwork) training starting from July 24, 2007 for an initial period of one month. It was completed on Sept. 13, 2007. Computers hardware and software training program was launched starting from July 31, 2007, for an initial period of one month. The program was completed on Sept. 12, 2007. A batch of seven students were declared successful. Plans are underway for providing training in electrical work, air conditioning & refrigeration, motorcycle, motor car, mobile phone repairing and cooking etc. Montessori Schools: A Montessori System based school with 40 children was stared from November 1, 2007, this school is located in the premises of GBHSS Kamal Khan Jokhio Goth, Kathore. The school is running very successfully and attracting many students. Two female teachers and a teacher aide is working in the school. A second Montessori System based school with 50 children was stared from January 1, 2008, this school is located in Bacchu Goth near Kathore. The school is functioning very successfully and students are very happy. All the students are being provided free education and uniform with shoes. Students (boys & girls) are divided into three groups according to their ages. Two groups ages 3 to 5 and 6 to 8 years are taught in the morning by two female teachers and students ages 9 and more years are being taught in the afternoon by a male teacher. Three teachers and a teacher aide is working in the school. A third Montessori System based school with 30 children was stared from January 15, 2008, this school is located in Haji Yousuf Goth near Kathore. Students (boys & girls) are divided into three groups according to their ages. All the groups ages 3 to 5, 6 to 8 and more than 9 years are being taught in the morning by three female teachers Three teachers and a teacher aide is working in the school. Community Services at Kathore: A new Suzuki Hi-Roof Bolan model 2008 Van was purchased and converted into an Ambulance. A fulltime driver who has some experience of handling emergency patients is hired. This ambulance is supporting the residents of Kathore village and surrounding areas. The emergency services are available for 24 hours seven days a week.
